What is pH?
We have come across this term during our secondary education level.
pH stands for “POTENTIAL OF HYDROGEN”
It is basically a measure of acidity and alkalinity of a substance on a scale of 1 -14, with 7 being neutral pH.
The lower nos. are acidic while upper levels are considered alkaline or Non-acidic.
You might be surprised to learn that healthy skin pH is more on the acidic side.
With More acidity,the skin can combat harmful microbes and damaging free radicals that might increase the aging process.

Normal healthy skin pH of 5.4 – 5.9 and therefore the surface of our skin is acidic. (Indian Journal of Dermatol 2014 sept-oct 59/5 pages 442-444)
The pH of skin increases in proportion to the pH of the cleanser or skincare products that you use. The increase in pH causes a dehydrating effect, irritability, and Propionibacterial count. Therefore we should use skincare products with pH 5.5 or lower. Unfortunately, most of the products do not disclose pH on the label of the product.
